Local 11-year-old hero is the grandson of Brother Frank Slyman

Brother Frank Slyman and his wife Yvonne are beaming. Their 11-year-old grandson Kyle is a hero.

On March 21, Kyle Jenkins and his classmates at Kwayhquitlum Middle School were on a field trip to Hyde Creek Pool. Kyle is an avid swimmer who especially likes to swim underwater, said Yvonne. On that day, he grabbed his brother Ryan’s goggles because he couldn’t find his own. Lucky he did or a fellow student might have died.

As he was swimming, he looked down and noticed another student face up and not moving on the bottom of the pool about seven feet down. All he could think of was, “What if that was me?” He immediately dived down, put his arm around the child’s torso and pulled him to the surface. Kyle noticed that the boy’s eyes were closed and his lips were blue. He swam with the boy to the side of the pool where other children helped pull him out. Shortly after, lifeguards, police, firefighters and victim services took over.

Family members cried when Kyle told them what happened. “It was very emotional for all of us,” Yvonne said. “I don’t know how he did it. The boy was larger than Kyle...We were just in awe. How he had the incentive to dash right into it—it’s really amazing. He just saw a boy in trouble and did it.”

Rescuers believe the boy may have been underwater for three minutes. He has since recovered.

Meanwhile, Kyle received a citizenship certificate from his school and a new bike from his parents. Kyle is back in swimming lessons and considering a career as a lifeguard.
