Local 115 fights the firing of pilots during organizing drive

A Local 115 organizing drive of 41 pilots at West Coast Air led to an unfair labour practice complaint to the federal labour relations board. Two senior pilots were fired by the Vancouver-based float plane company and the Local Union is convinced the firings were a result of the organizing drive.

“This move to organize is about representation for all workers, not just a few,” said Business Manager Gary Kroeker. “The pilots saw a need for representation and they are prepared to stick together.”

“Pay is a big issue,” added Assistant Business Manager Brian Cochrane. “They tried on their own to work out a deal with the employer so they’re wages would be comparable with the rest of the industry, but that process got frustrated so they came to us to form a union.”

The next hurdle facing the workers is the Canadian Labour Code, said Kroeker. “It is better than the B.C. Labour Code in that it recognizes automatic certification, but it is so cumbersome and bureaucratic that it could be months before the issue is settled,” he said.

West Coast Air, with 20 planes and 150 employees, is owned by Rick Baxter.
