Bursaries and Scholarships

FRED RANDALL BURSARY
B.C. Building and Construction Trades Council

The British Columbia and Yukon Territory Building and Construction Trades Council has established two $500 bursaries in the memory of Brother Fred Randall.

The following conditions outline your ability to apply:

- A member in good standing
- Enrolled in a union-recognized Trades Training program
- A 250-word essay must be submitted by the applicants on the topic of “Commitment to Trade Union Principles”.

The committee will be making their selections considering financial need, proficiency in the trade and the applicant’s commitment to Trade Union principles. One applicant will be selected from each Joint Training Board for consideration. The two selections will be made from those applicants. The deadline for submissions is the end of June.

The successful applicants will be awarded their bursary at the confirmation of attendance of their training program following the committee selection.

CAL CALLAHAN MEMORIAL BURSARY/BURSARIES
Pipeline Industry
Amount: Total $6,000. May be divided between more than one applicant.

Criteria: Awarded annually to a son, daughter or legal ward of a person who derives their principal income from the Pipeline Industry and whose employers are members of this association. The purpose of these bursaries is to give financial assistance to students who are beginning undergraduate studies in a full programme leading to a degree or certificate in any field, at a recognized university or college in Canada. Selection will be made by the Executive Committee based upon scholastic record and financial need, provided the applicant otherwise qualifies.

Applications: Applications may be obtained from and submitted to the Association Office at any time, but must be supported by transcripts of high school record, evidence of university or college enrollment and proof of payment.

CANADIAN CONFERENCE BURSARY
International Union of Operating Engineers
Amount: Total $2,000 divided into four bursaries across Canada ($500—Quebec/Ontario, $500—Manitoba/Saskatchewan, $500—Atlantic Canada, $500—Alberta/B.C.)

Criteria: Awarded annually to a member, spouse, son, daughter or legal ward of a member of a Canadian Local of the Operating Engineers.

Open to first year and better as a full time student at a recognized public Canadian college or university in any discipline leading to a diploma, certificate or degree.

Awards are based upon academic standing and must be accompanied by a high school transcript and a letter of recommendation from a person with personal academic knowledge of the candidate.

An essay of 1000 words must accompany the application on the impact that being a member or a dependant of a union member has had on the applicant’s life.

M.L. (MIKE) PARR BURSARY OR BURSARIES
Amount: Total $2,000. May be divided between more than one applicant.

Criteria: Awarded annually to a son, daughter or legal ward of a member of the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 115 entering first year studies in any discipline at a recognized Canadian college, university or vocational school as a full time student. Awards are based upon secondary school academic standing.

DONALD SMITH SCHOLARSHIP
Amount: Up to $2,000.

Criteria: Awarded annually to a member: member's son, daughter or legal ward; or a member’s spouse who is in full-time attendance at either the University of British Columbia, Simon Fraser University, University of Victoria or University of Northern British Columbia pursuing studies in Engineering, Industrial Relations or Law at either the graduate or undergraduate level. Awards are based upon academic standing.

PIONEERS MEMORIAL BURSARY
Operating Engineers' Credit Union

Bursaries from the Operating Engineers Credit Union Pioneers Memorial as well as other trust funds are offered through the Credit Union Foundation of British Columbia (go to Student Information link). These bursaries provide supplemental assistance to students on academic, vocational or technological programs at B.C. educational facilities. The prime criteria is financial need.

Application forms may be obtained from the Operating Engineers’ Credit Union or send a note to the foundation.

Deadline: Applications for students starting school in the fall must be submitted between Sept. 1 and Oct. 15.
