District 2Major project work has to move from romour to reality (July 2007) By Tim Cullen, Member Representative Wow! Have we been busy so far this year! Unfortunately, it has been more paperwork than job orders. Currently, and for the next little while, the work picture for the Island is all about residential and light industrial subdivisions. There are exciting rumours of some big subdivisions, a genstation, a windmill farm, an LNG plant and high rise towers. But the key word is rumours, nothing is definite. Like a ship in the fog—one minute it’s there, the next it’s gone—or was it really there in the first place? So the gold rush isn’t on just yet. I’m not saying that we don’t need qualified operators from other regions. Occasionally we do, but I feel that our local contractors should place more emphasis on training local residents to meet their requirements as they arise. We have settled the O.K. Industries Paving Agreement and the Vancouver Island Utility Addendum. Both agreements saw substantial increases in the first year of the four-year agreement. Ralmax employees will receive a wage increase based on the cost of living increase for the Victoria area. As of March 1, 2007, it was 2%. |We’re still in bargaining with United Rentals, Robinson Rentals and Eaglestar (Morningstar) Golf Course. We are about to begin negotiations with Victoria Materials Depot and Semiahmoo (Eaglecrest) Golf Course. Members working at Brandt Tractor should have received proposal forms for next year’s bargaining. I am requesting that each of you fill out the sheet and return it to me as soon as possible so we can start preparing. Bargaining will begin in early February 2008. I will gauge the interest in proposals by the number of people who make them. In closing, I wish you and your loved ones a safe, fun-filled summer. |
