District 2Projects and negotiations (June 2008) By Tim Cullen, Member Representative GeI woke up the morning of April 19 to see a foot of snow outside. Hopefully, we get into some good old summertime weather soon. Since my last article, we have ratified the Robinson Rentals collective agreement. We were able to mirror it to the United Rentals (Vancouver Island) agreement. We are in bargaining with Waste Services Inc. (Courtenay, Parksville and Duncan divisions) and Brandt Tractor Ltd. Both have been going fairly well to this point. We have not had any further information on the LNG plant in Nanaimo or the Waste Burning Power Generation Plant in Gold River. Construction on both is supposed to start this year. Upland Excavating Ltd. was working at the NVI Mine site and it looked like work would continue through the rest of the year. However, it was suddenly shut down by the mine. Apparently, the work is going out for further tender. The mine also laid off about 150 workers. We believe this shutdown for Upland may have something to do with the sub-contractor on site. Hopefully, things will get better and we can get back to work. We had two crews working there and this loss of work meant layoffs for operators and mechanics in the Upland shop. Hazelwood Construction Inc. is still going strong at the Departure Bay Ferry Terminal. This work consists of road realignment, terminal expansion and relocation of the ferry toll booths to accommodate a larger parking area for cars that are waiting to get on the ferry. Chew Excavating Ltd. has picked up a large subdivision in Sooke. This work will keep most of the crew busy throughout the summer. Hub City Paving Ltd. has just completed installing a new asphalt plant in their pit and has been busy with paving projects in the Central Island area. In closing, we hope you and your friends and family have a great summer. |
