District 3
Don't forget about non-union / New member rep's background
(July 2007)

Don't forget about others working non-union
By Gary Kinnear, Member Representative
Summer is here and I hope everyone is working. The work picture is good throughout the province for the foreseeable future.
This is an election year for our Local Union. I urge you all to exercise your democratic right and vote. This is your union. You have a say. Remember, we are Simply the Best!
With the work picture looking good, we tend to relax and think “I’m doing fine.” We forget about all the people working non-union and rat union. These people deserve to be represented by a union and reap the same benefits you do. When we talk to people working in these situations, we should be talking about the benefits that membership provides. In the construction sector, we should be shouting from the rooftops about how good our pension plan is, our extended health coverage, etc. Your member representatives need your help in organizing. For the benefit of all, we must expand our market share.
Our local contractors (Emil Anderson Ltd., Dawson Construction, Brentwood, CGL Contracting and BA Blacktop) are busy throughout District 3. We are waiting for more highway work to be announced by the provincial and federal governments.
I hope you all have a full and safe work year.

A little background about the new member rep
By Brad Gerow, Member Representative
I am your new member representative in the Kamloops office. My history in the construction industry starts at a young age; the first two years of my life were spent in Honeymoon Creek, a highways maintenance camp north of the Mackenzie Junction. After a couple of years there, we headed off to Revelstoke where the dam project was in full force. After a couple of years, we moved to Kamloops, where I spent years out on the road with my father as he worked on the Logan Lake Road project and all three phases of the Coquihalla Highway.

Between my father, Gerry, and my grandfather, Hector, both of whom worked for the highways ministry for many years, I have a rich family history in construction.

Choosing a different path for myself I went into the mechanical field, getting my certification in the spring of 2000. I could not get enough of the construction industry. I spent a lot of time at construction shows and as much time in the field as possible.

For the past nine years, I worked for James Western Star Sterling Ltd. I began by doing oil changes, but moved up to foreman. I learned an enormous amount there and that is where my experience with the Operating Engineers started.

Now, in this job, I am looking forward to meeting and talking with all of you.

Currently, we are in bargaining with Freightliner of Kelowna. We are preparing to being negotiations with Peace Country Freightliner and James Western Star Kamloops.

Thanks to all of our Shop Stewards for doing such a great job of looking after our members’ interests in the workplace.
