District 3
Many projects expected
(March 2008)

By Brad Gerow, Member Representative
We are gearing up for another great season after such a good year in 2007.

We’re looking forward to work on the No. 5 and 6 turbines at the Revelstoke Dam. There’s also talk about work coming up on the No. 5 and 6 turbines at the Mica Dam.

Also in Revelstoke, Brentwood Enterprises has picked up the water line to the new ski resort in town. Phase 1 began last year. Work will continue when the many feet of snow melt away so digging can begin again.

Moving west, there is talk about finally correcting a winding two-lane section at Hoffman’s Bluff on the Trans Canada Highway that has seen many accidents over the last few years.

In Kelowna, Emil Anderson Construction is still busy working on subdivisions. It has crews all over town making room for the housing developments that just keep popping up. We have several members working with Vancouver Pile Driving on the William R. Bennett Bridge. They are doing piling and hoisting work. Emil Anderson has completed the bridge approaches and will do the tie-ins when the bridge is completed.
Last year Emil Anderson completed the Campbell Road Interchange, which required a road realignment, the overpass and paving. It was a good quick job for our crews, but it wasn’t a simple project. The only road between Kelowna and Westbank had to be kept open for large amounts of commuting traffic. The crews did a great job of keeping the work and the traffic going.

Western Industrial Contractors is still working on the Penticton Event Centre. We hope the company gets more work in this area.

Around Kamloops, we have Dawson Construction finishing off its project at Tobiano.

An airport expansion project is also coming up. The design portion of this project has been awarded and we are now waiting for the results of the construction tendering. There are a number of other contracts coming up in the area this year and most of them are due before the end of June.

A couple of companies closed down in the last few months. Dynatec Mining in Kamloops employed half a dozen of our members in the shop. The new owners back east decided to move all their maintenance and repair work to Ontario.

Canpar, a door core plant in Grand Forks that employed about 100 members, shut down its operation on Dec. 22. We are working with Community Futures and our Training Plan to help these people make the transition to new jobs. The majority of these members have been at Canpar for 10 or more years and have transferable skills. They should have no trouble finding new work.

Thanks to all our shop stewards for the hard work they do day in and day out to keep things flowing for all the members they work with.

Finally, a reminder to members to look around your job sites and talk to people who are working for non-union employers or rat unions. Tell them about the benefits of working for a bona fide trade union.

Let’s have a good safe season. We will be seeing you at the job or at your Local Union meeting. DON’T FORGET TO COME TO THE MEETINGS!
