District 4
Heavy Metal Rocks

(September 2008)

Another successful Heavy Metal Rocks event (Heavy Construction Work Experience and Career Awareness) was held in Prince George in April.

The Operating Engineers members who donated their time and efforts to this project contributed to that success.

Local 115, together with the Prince George Construction Association, WorkSafeBC, School District 57 and the College of New Caledonia, has been offering this four-day course to Grade 10, 11 and 12 students for several years.

This year, 38 students applied to the program and, after going through the interview process, 30 students were selected. By the end of the four days, they knew a little more about what it means to be a heavy equipment operator.

Students tried out graders, rock trucks, loaders, mobile cranes and a truck crane.

Day 1—Students received safety training and learned safe work procedures for all equipment they would be operating. Then they toured Inland Concrete Limited’s wash and concrete plant.

Days 2 and 3—Students left on the bus at 6:45 a.m. sharp; attended the daily tool box talk, rotated around 16 stations and left the work site at 5 p.m.

Day 4—From 7 a.m. to 1 p.m., students demonstrated their operating skills to parents and other guests and attended a closing ceremony with acting Mayor Don Zurowski, WorkSafe Manager Bruce Clarke and school board trustees.

The Heavy Metal Rocks program is more popular every year. The program will be offered in Kelowna this fall. I encourage Kelowna-area Operating Engineers who can lend a hand to contact Member Rep Brad Gerow at the Kamloops office (250-554-2278) or Jeff Gorham at the Operating Engineers Training Plan in Burnaby (604-299-7764).
