Dispatch
A member who understands how things work
(June 2008)

By Malcolm Oliver, Dispatcher
The contractors’ orders for workers continue to increase as we approach the summer. The orders for crane operators, heavy duty mechanics and asphalt road crews are very difficult to fill. I may sound like a broken record when I speak of these classifications, but I suspect the demand for workers who have skills and qualifications for these jobs will remain high for many years to come.

I received a gratifying call from a member who was offered a job on the Pitt River Bridge. He told me that he turned down the work and informed the company that if it was signatory to the Operating Engineers he would have accepted the position. This member knows that by accepting this position he would not have been building his pension or health and welfare benefits. He would have been supporting an employer that is undermining the level playing field and hurting union companies that have been paying into his pension plan and providing his health and welfare benefits.

I understand that we all need to earn a living and a dollar doesn’t go very far today, but, as members, we need to put pressure on non-signatory companies to sign an agreement with Local 115.

I would like to encourage members to contact our organizing office at 604-473-5259 (or the main office at 604-291-8831) to discuss organizing opportunities with me, an organizer or a member representative.
