Dispatch
Potential members advised to focus on specific jobs
(March 2008)

By Malcolm Oliver, Dispatcher
The work picture for 2008 should remain good for most members in District 1. Orders for heavy duty mechanics and crane operators remain the most difficult to fill.

Many potential members call or come into the Dispatch Office looking for a job doing just about anything.

The jobs that are available require a certain skill level and I suggest that potential members research job descriptions and focus on positions they would enjoy. The staff at the Operating Engineers Training Plan may interview some of them and offer advice about the steps they need to take to become trained in their chosen field.

A large percentage of jobs that can be obtained through the Operating Engineers pay the same as what a university graduate would make. Yet the cost of training in the construction industry is only a fraction of what it costs to become a university graduate.

Contractors are looking for workers with a high skill level, a good work ethic and an ability to get along with other members of the crew.

Current and potential members who stay focused on their work-related goals should be successful with the help of Local 115 and the signatory contractors.
