Dispatch
Older workers needed to mentor
(September 2008)

By Malcolm Oliver, Dispatcher
The number of dispatches decreased in June and fewer members booked in as available for work.

Orders for crane operators, heavy duty mechanics and asphalt laydown still remain the most difficult to fill.

Recently, I read that the Construction Sector Council had conducted a survey to forecast labour market conditions. The survey indicated that a record 42,000 new workers were hired last year and another 94,000 would be needed in Canada over the next 8 years. The survey also indicated that there will be a problem finding enough workers due to the number of baby boomers who will be retiring over the next few years.

Older experienced workers are needed to mentor younger workers who are coming into the construction industry.

The predicted increase in the number of construction workers should provide a window of opportunity for union members to help non-union members certify the companies that employ them. The certification of non-union companies is very important because the more non-union jobs that are out there, the lower the wages for all workers in the construction industry.

Members or non-members who want to pass on information regarding organizing opportunities should contact Local 115’s Organizing Office at 604-473-5259 and speak to Brothers Bob Higgs or Jim Flynn. You can also call 604-291-8831 and speak with a member representative.
