OrganizingMembers make a difference (September 2008) By Bob Higgs, Organizer Good news from the organizing department. After a number of years and many attempts, we have been successful in organizing CWS Industries. CWS is a welding and fabrication shop that saw over 100 jobs shipped out to a foreign country in the last year. This was a hard fought campaign that started at the beginning of this century and was finally won with the vote being counted in July. Welcome aboard to all the brothers and sisters at CWS. Good work! Another success story started with a member giving a non-union man one of our business cards and informing him of the benefits of being an Operating Engineer. The man called an organizer and within two weeks the outfit was voting. The company was the Campbell River division of International Paper Industries (IPI). Congratulations to our new members at IPI for voting 100% in favor of joining the Operating Engineers. Members from all over the province are helping out in their districts, doing what they can to help build their union. I can honestly say that I’m not only proud to be a member of the Operating Engineers, I’m also proud of all the brothers and sisters who are doing their best to spread the word about the union that is “simply the best.” Remember: It’s as easy as one call, one business card, or one conversation. Members do make a difference. |
